Is it a sin to dislike someone or dislike their personality? Can we love someone but at the same time dislike them?

love.jpgWhat our Lord Jesus taught us is to love each other as He loves us. And our Lord loves us, not because of ourselves, but despite ourselves. He taught His disciples, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35). Our Lord loves us regardless of our personalities, our weaknesses, and our sins. Therefore, this is the kind of love that we should have for each other.

Nevertheless, it is impossible for you to like everyone’s personality. It is impossible for you to approve of every person’s behavior, or for you to agree with every opinion you hear. For example, as St. Paul taught us, “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14). You will definitely have many differences of opinion with people who don’t believe in God, for example, and they may persecute you. Certainly, you will not approve of certain aspects of their personalities. However, as our Lord Jesus Christ said, “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.” (Matthew 5:44-48).

Someone may ask, how is it possible to love those who persecute us, or those who are very different than us, or those who hate us or hate God Himself?! This love is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. It is a gift from God, and the more we grow in our spiritual life and our relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ, the more He grants us the ability to love others. We also have to train ourselves to think positively about others and try to love them.

Even if we disagree with others, or do not approve of their actions, we should not “dislike” them or judge them. So do not allow yourself to dislike someone, even if you have differences. Teach yourself to love him/her by understanding that he/she may have weaknesses just like you have weaknesses, and train yourself to see the positive things about this person. This way, even if you don’t agree about everything, you will not judge him/her in your heart, and your love for this person will grow.
