What is the best way to start a daily Bible study regimen? Would it be to start from Genesis? (I am 30 yrs old)

bible_reading.jpgThis really depends on whether or not you are reading the Bible for the first time. Many fathers agree that when reading the Bible for the first time, we should follow a quicker reading schedule, focusing less on a “Bible study” approach, and more on efficiency. Afterwards, we can focus on an in depth study of the individual books. Also, the fathers generally agree that we should not overlook the New Testament while reading from the Old Testament.

The answer to your question also depends on your schedule, and how much time you are able to spend on Bible reading. For example, will you read 1 chapter a day, or can you read 3 chapters a day, or perhaps more? We would recommend that you consult with your spiritual father, or father of confession, for advice regarding a Bible study regimen.

Generally though, if you are reading the Bible for the first time, start with the New Testament (27 books, 260 chapters). If you can read  2 – 3 chapters daily, you will finish the NT in about 3 – 4 months. After finishing the New Testament, you would have a few options. You can read daily from the NT and OT (starting from the beginning of each), or you can read 1 book from the NT followed by 1 book from the OT (also in order, starting from the beginning of each) and keep alternating. If you read 2 – 3 chapters a day from the OT (39 books, 929 chapters), you will finish it in about 12 – 18 months. Once you have completed reading both the NT and OT, you can then start a new regimen. May God bless your reading and grant you consistency and spiritual benefit.
