During Liturgy, is it wrong to pray by yourself and not follow along with Abouna?
As a general rule, we should concentrate on praying together in unity during the Divine Liturgy. The congregation, lead by the chorus of deacons, should be praying together. So try to participate in the hymns and prayers as much as you can, and to follow along. Think of yourself as being part of this whole congregation of believers, praying to God together. It’s a big blessing to share in this communal prayer. The more you contemplate on this, the more you’ll enjoy participating in the Liturgy. Try to read about the Liturgy, so that you can understand the structure and the meaning of the prayers. The more you appreciate its depth, the more you’ll enjoy following along. We would recommend that you read “ How to Benefit from the Holy Liturgy ” by H.G. Bishop Mettaous.
However, if you feel the desire to lift up your heart to God in prayer
regarding a certain matter, you can take some moments during the
Liturgy to pray these personal prayers. Sometimes, a few moments of
silent prayer during the Liturgy really help you lift up your heart to
God. That being said, there are certain parts of the Liturgy that
require our utmost attention and reverence, such as the Consecration
(which includes the Institution Narrative), during which the Holy
Spirit descends on the bread and wine, transforming them into the Holy
Body and Precious Blood of our Lord Jesus. The deacon serving in the
Sanctuary sings, “Let us attend, Amen” right before these prayers,
reminding the believers to pay close attention to this holy moment in
the Liturgy.
