I Fish
By: B. M.

fisihing_storm.jpgWe go through an experience that clarifies a passage in the bible.   So here is one of mine :)

I am a fishing addict, there is always fishing equipment in my house, car, work (yes, work). I fish in good weather, poor weather and in real bad weather. I fish in my dreams :) I fished ponds, lakes, canals, rivers, seas, oceans. I fished from shore lines, canoes, pontoons, boats, and big ships.

Years ago we had a warm December, so with another fishing addict I went deep sea fishing.  This was on 12/31/95 very early in the morning we got our fishing gear ready and drove to the marina. Still nice weather in low 50’s and promised to be in 60’s during the day.  I was so excited I could hardly sit still.

So here we are on the boat, wearing many layers of cloths gloves; still feeling great.  The captain started heading to what they call the honey whole where we can catch fish.  Good news, everything is lined up to catch the big ones.  As we went deeper and away from the shore the weather got colder and waves got higher.  Picture the 90 foot boat bouncing off high waves.  It started to get less fun.  An hour later we still riding to get to the fishing spot and the temperature kept dropping and waves getting higher. Now the hat and my sweatshirt hood is not enough to keep my head warm. My toes were cold with double suck and army boots.  Same goes for double pants.

The waves were very high from peak to valley about 30 feet. It was like riding those high speed elevators going up and down for a long time.  And suddenly the boat slowed down to stop and the horn sounded which meant fishermen can start fishing.  My head started spinning and felt seasick.  NOT GOOD.  I forced myself to fish as my bait touches the bottom I hooked a fish and it was a big one.  I was fighting the seasickness more than the fish then I handed my rod to another person to find the nearest bucket to empty my empty stomach….  Gross, I know, sorry…  For the next 6 hours all I did is lay down and could not even open my eyes.  The boat was bouncing like a small cork.  Fishing was good.  No going back until the 6 hours trip is over.  I felt so helpless with no control over anything.  I was cold, dizzy, weak, miserable, and little scarred. I had a thought, this is like when Jesus was in the boat and the waves were ruff and the disciples were scarred.

Jesus Calms the Storm (Matthew 8:23-27)
"Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!"

He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.  The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!"

As we experience difficulties we seek GOD’s help.  Like the disciples when GOD is with us, no storm can harm us.  During that time, I was dealing with many storms in my life and I needed to know that GOD IS with me.  Sometimes we go through an experience like this to strengthen our relationship with GOD. Now you might understand why I love to fish; because every time I go fishing meditate. It is my way to connect with GOD.  I fish, I reflect, I pray, I learn, and I thank GOD for my lesson that day.
